- Description: View tab, Windows panel, User Interface, Project Browser turns the browser back on in Revit. When it is ticked and still hidden, follow Autodesk's fix order, then dock it, find the sheet a view sits on, and group views and sheets with a browser organization scheme of your own.

To open the Project Browser in Revit, choose View tab, Windows panel, User Interface and tick [Project Browser](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-GetStarted/files/GUID-C8D3E5A6-02A5-43A9-AFFC-D49DD27398B1.htm?ref=revitclub.net). You can also right-click in the application window and choose Browsers, Project Browser. If the box is already ticked but the window is missing, check display scaling and the monitor layout before resetting the interface.

These routes and labels follow Revit 2027 on Windows; [Revit LT 2027 has the same opening routes](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/RevitLT-GetStarted/files/GUID-C8D3E5A6-02A5-43A9-AFFC-D49DD27398B1.htm?ref=revitclub.net). Showing or hiding the browser changes the window layout and leaves the model contents in place. The [views and sheets](https://revitclub.net/tag/views-sheets/) section covers the model views and the sheets they appear on.

## Missing, hidden or only filtered?

Check whether the whole window is missing or only an item in its list. The User Interface check box separates the first two cases:

- **Switched off.** The Project Browser check box in the User Interface drop-down is clear. Ticking it is the whole fix, in the next section.
- **Switched on, but not on screen.** The box is ticked and still nothing shows. The window may be off the visible area, on a second monitor, or in a damaged window layout. Autodesk's troubleshooting order further down covers this.
- **On screen, but the view you want is not in it.** A tab other than All is selected (Revit 2025 and later), text is still sitting in the search box (Revit 2024 and later), or the browser organization scheme filters the view out. These controls narrow the list without deleting views. Clear the search and return to All, then check an unfiltered scheme.

![Four Project Browser cases: switched off, offscreen, a narrowed list, or disabled in one model](https://storage.ghost.io/c/85/87/8587d5e4-79c0-44e6-83d8-329eb0b5abe6/content/images/2026/11/v3-missing-browser-triage-r2-4654f58a5891.webp)

A missing window, a narrowed list and a disabled checkbox in one model need different checks. Back up layout files before a reset. [Open full-size view](https://storage.ghost.io/c/85/87/8587d5e4-79c0-44e6-83d8-329eb0b5abe6/content/images/2026/11/v3-missing-browser-triage-r2-4654f58a5891.webp?ref=revitclub.net).

## Turn the Project Browser back on

Start in the project whose views you want to find or organize.

### From the View tab

1. Click View tab, Windows panel, User Interface. A drop-down list opens with a check box next to each window it controls.
2. Tick Project Browser. Selecting or clearing a box shows or hides that window. If the box was already ticked, leave it ticked: you are in the second state above, not the first.
3. Check the result in the list itself, not on the ribbon: the window titled Project Browser is back, and the name of the active view is shown in bold inside it.

### From a right-click

Right-click anywhere in the application window and click Browsers, Project Browser. Use the right-click route when the cursor is already in the drawing area. The ribbon route wins once you need more than the browser: the same User Interface list holds Keyboard Shortcuts and Browser Organization, both used further down this page.

### A keyboard shortcut of your own

Revit ships the Project Browser command without keys. [The default Revit 2027 shortcut list](https://revit.downloads.autodesk.com/download/2027RVT%5FRTM/Docs/InProd/RVTKeyboardShortcuts.pdf?ref=revitclub.net) leaves that command unassigned, and the obvious letter pairs are already taken: PP (like VP and Ctrl+1) toggles the Properties palette, PB opens MEP Fabrication Parts, and FF runs Find in Project Browser. The steps for [adding a keyboard shortcut in Revit 2027](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-81EF5A21-F562-43A2-A816-109915C82B01.htm?ref=revitclub.net) run like this:

1. Click View tab, Windows panel, User Interface, Keyboard Shortcuts (KS in the default list).
2. Type Project Browser in the search field. If you would rather browse, set Filter to All Not Defined, which lists commands that have no keys yet; All Defined shows the ones that do.
3. Select the command in the Assignments list. The cursor moves to the Press new keys field.
4. Press the key sequence you want. It appears in the field as you type, and you can clear it and press again.
5. Click Assign. Check the Shortcuts column on the command's row: the new sequence should be listed there.

A Press new keys field that stays gray means the selected command is reserved and takes no new keys. Once Project Browser has exactly one shortcut, the tooltip shows it the next time Revit starts.

## Ticked, but still not on screen

I'd check the monitors before resetting the ribbon, because an offscreen window can return without losing interface customizations. Autodesk's [Revit 2027 troubleshooting steps](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Troubleshooting/files/GUID-686EE716-3DEA-4D84-8DAA-BA09F538B349.htm?ref=revitclub.net) cover display scaling and docking, then the broader UIState.dat reset. Its current support article also provides a separate window-layout reset:

1. **Confirm the box.** Repeat the User Interface route and make sure Project Browser is ticked. If ticking it brings the window back, stop here.
2. **Display scaling.** Set Windows display scaling to 100%, as the troubleshooting page recommends, then check the edges of the Revit window. Restore your preferred scaling after locating the browser.
3. **Check the monitors.** Switch Windows to a single monitor. If the browser appears, drag it into the Revit window and dock it before returning to two monitors. Revit saves the browser's size and location for the next start. If it stays offscreen, check which monitor is the main display before moving on.
4. **Reset the window layout.** Close Revit. Autodesk's [missing-window support procedure](https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Project-Browser-is-missing-in-Revit.html?ref=revitclub.net) says to delete or rename `RevitUILayout.xml` in `%APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit <product year>\`. I would rename it to `RevitUILayout.xml.bak` to retain the original. Use your installed product-year folder. Reopen Revit and check whether Project Browser is visible. This file is in the product-year folder, separate from the language-folder file in the next step.
5. **Reset the broader interface only if needed.** Deleting `UIState.dat` removes ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar customizations and restores the default interface. Exit Revit. In File Explorer, open `%APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\`, then the folder for your product and release, then its language folder. Copy `UIState.dat` to a backup folder before deleting the original, and keep that copy if you need the previous customizations. Reopen Revit and tick Project Browser in the User Interface list if it is still hidden. This is the separate reset described in the [versioned Revit 2027 help](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Troubleshooting/files/GUID-686EE716-3DEA-4D84-8DAA-BA09F538B349.htm?ref=revitclub.net).

If the browser is blank only in one model and its checkbox is disabled, check whether it works in another project before changing more of your global layout. Autodesk documents this pattern in [a Revit 2022 to 2024 incident involving corruption after an upgrade](https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Missing-Project-Browser-in-a-Revit-model.html?ref=revitclub.net). That finding belongs to the reported incident; a disabled checkbox alone does not diagnose your file. Preserve the affected RVT and ask project support before rebuilding the project or binding links.

## Dock it again, alone or stacked with Properties

Revit saves the browser's size and position for the next start. [Dock or group it with Properties](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-GetStarted/files/GUID-2FCA3097-36CC-4EED-B6BB-BAF431EC9475.htm?ref=revitclub.net) to keep the controls you need visible:

- **Dock or float in one move.** Double-click the browser's title bar. A floating browser docks; a docked one floats.
- **Choose the side.** Drag the title bar until the cursor touches the left edge of the Revit window. An outline previews where the window will land; release when it is where you want it. To move it without it snapping into a dock, hold Ctrl while you drag.
- **Stack Properties under it.** Drag the Properties palette onto the lower edge of the docked browser's title bar, and the two sit one above the other.
- **Or make a tabbed group.** Drop Properties inside the title bar instead. Each window becomes a tab at the bottom of the group, and you drag a tab out to split them again. A group can hold the browser and Properties together, but it cannot mix interface windows with open views.
- **Resize.** Drag the edge of the docked browser.

I prefer the stack to the tab group for this page's work. Setting up a browser scheme means reading a view's values in Properties while you watch where that view lands in the list, and a tab group shows only one of the two at a time.

## What the Project Browser lists

Each Project Browser branch opens into the items below it in the current project. The [eight persistent tabs introduced in Revit 2025](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-CD1B9FEB-BAFD-4690-89F0-B6DD5370EC89.htm?ref=revitclub.net) are All, Views, Legends, Schedules, Sheets, Families, Groups and Links. Panel Schedules, Reports and Assemblies get tabs dynamically rather than permanently.

- **Views.** Grouped by view type under the default scheme, so floor plan views, ceiling plans, 3D views and elevations each get a group. The name of the scheme in use shows at the top level of the branch. The 3D group holds every saved 3D view, 3D section box views included.
- **Legends** and **Schedules/Quantities.** Schedules are listed by name by default.
- **Sheets.** Ordered by sheet number and sheet name by default. Expand a sheet and the views placed on it are listed beneath it.
- **Families.** The families [loaded into the project](https://revitclub.net/load-family-revit/), with their types. The branch lists loaded content. You can set a family's appearance in one view and [halftone a family in one view](https://revitclub.net/halftone-family-revit/) without touching the rest.
- **Groups.** Right-click a group for Delete, Rename, Select All Instances, Properties, Duplicate and Reload.
- **Revit Links.** Right-click for Manage Links, Create Instance, and Unload or Reload. In a workshared model, working in a local file, Unload For me is a per-user override that stays until you clear it; Unload For all users reaches everyone.

![Revit 2027 search for wall across Views, Sheets and Families, including a section placed on a sheet](https://storage.ghost.io/c/85/87/8587d5e4-79c0-44e6-83d8-329eb0b5abe6/content/images/2026/11/v1-browser-search-r2-ead5702d72e2.webp)

The same search reaches Views, Sheets and Families. Callout 2 points to the section listed beneath its sheet. [Open full-size view](https://storage.ghost.io/c/85/87/8587d5e4-79c0-44e6-83d8-329eb0b5abe6/content/images/2026/11/v1-browser-search-r2-ead5702d72e2.webp?ref=revitclub.net).

Use these list controls when a branch is long. Ctrl+Scroll zooms the list itself. Right-click a node for Expand Selected or Collapse Selected; Expand All and Collapse All work from a node or from white space. A fast double-click opens a view, while a slow double-click, F2 or right-click Rename starts renaming it, so a name that turns into an edit box means the double-click was too slow.

## Find a view without scrolling

In Revit 2024 and later, a search box sits at the top of the browser. In the current browser, [one search covers all tabs](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-GetStarted/files/GUID-C8D3E5A6-02A5-43A9-AFFC-D49DD27398B1.htm?ref=revitclub.net). The list updates as you type and highlights matches at every level. Press the up and down arrow keys to move through the results and Enter to open the selected view. From Revit 2025 on, [a matching parent brings all its children into the results](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-AB057216-9BDC-4AAF-9EE7-0C6E89E7F7EE.htm?ref=revitclub.net), so typing part of a sheet name lists that sheet along with the views placed on it. Clear the box when you are done: leftover text is an easy way for a view to seem missing.

To find an item from the model, use [Find in Project Browser](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-GetStarted/files/GUID-C8D3E5A6-02A5-43A9-AFFC-D49DD27398B1.htm?ref=revitclub.net). Select an element in the drawing area, right-click and click Find in Project Browser (FF in the default list). With nothing selected, it finds the active view or sheet. The canvas command needs the browser on screen, which is one more reason to bring a missing browser back first. It does not reach Keynote Legends, schedule and panel schedule views that are not on a sheet, Reports, elements that have no entry in the browser, or views and sheets the current browser organization filters out.

To open several views at once, select them and choose Open. Revit asks to confirm, and the dialog offers Always open multiple views if you would rather not be asked again.

## Find the sheet a view sits on

A view goes on one sheet only. To show the same view on a second sheet, you duplicate it, while legends and schedules, view lists and sheet lists included, can sit on many sheets. That rule is why the browser can answer "which sheet?" for a view with one click.

1. In the browser, right-click the view name and click Open Sheet.
2. Check the result in the Sheets branch: the sheet opens in the drawing area and its name turns bold as the active view.
3. If Open Sheet is grayed out, the view is not on any sheet, or it is a schedule or legend, which can be on several. Selecting more than one view first brings a confirmation with Always open multiple sheets.

Two settings change how much of this you can see without clicking. The [placement icons](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-GetStarted/files/GUID-C8D3E5A6-02A5-43A9-AFFC-D49DD27398B1.htm?ref=revitclub.net) mark whether each view is on a sheet, off it, or, for schedules, partly placed; right-click in the browser to switch them on or off. That switch is stored in your [Revit.ini Project Browser settings](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-90313B68-31D7-4C22-B3F6-1B700499A85E.htm?ref=revitclub.net) as Show View Placement On Sheet Status Icons. Revit 2027 also lets you [control whether sheet nodes expand automatically](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-5C3B1218-BB7B-47DC-AB47-94B467B689A1.htm?ref=revitclub.net) when a view is added to a sheet.

Placing works from the same list. With a sheet open, drag the view name onto it, or use View tab, Sheet Composition panel, Place View; [placing views on sheets](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-DocumentPresent/files/GUID-D3E7FDC3-57AB-4497-AB87-D195476254C2.htm?ref=revitclub.net) covers the viewport side of that.

## Organize views and sheets with browser organization

A browser organization scheme reaches one branch of one project: the Views list, the Sheets list or the Schedules/Quantities list. It changes how that list is grouped, sorted and filtered, and it does not rename, move or delete a single view. As [Autodesk's browser organization reference](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-FC5A8E35-BAC5-45AD-B6C2-B6B551417CF9.htm?ref=revitclub.net) explains, a scheme takes up to six levels of grouping, sorts items ascending or descending inside each group, and adds up to three filters. Out of the box, views are grouped by view type, sheets by sheet number and sheet name, and schedules and quantities by name.

The scheme is one of several places that shape the list, and they reach very different distances:

| Set it here | It reaches | Choose it when |
| --------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Search box | The list on screen, until you clear the text | You need one view now and will not need the same subset again |
| A browser tab | Which kind of item the list shows | You are working through one kind of item, such as sheets |
| Scheme on a branch | Grouping, order and filter of Views, Sheets or Schedules/Quantities in this project | You look for views by the same property every day |
| Project template | The schemes every new project starts with | The same scheme should be in every new job |
| Transfer Project Standards | A copy of all schemes in a project already under way | A running project needs the schemes another project has |
| Placement icons (Revit.ini) | Your own Revit settings, in every project you open | You want the on-sheet icons on or off |

For a repeated grouping, I would build the scheme in your project template because every new project can then start with it. Search is the shorter route to a view you need once. Keep a new scheme unfiltered until you have checked the grouping; a filter can hide the very view you are trying to find.

### Switch the scheme on a branch

1. In the browser, select the Views node (or Sheets, or Schedules/Quantities).
2. Pick a scheme from the Type Selector, which sits in Properties, so that palette has to be open too.
3. Check the top of the branch: the scheme's name now shows there, and the groups beneath it follow the new rules.

The longer route in [Autodesk's steps for applying an organization scheme](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-C2E3791D-E5D9-4769-8116-5910438F6624.htm?ref=revitclub.net) is a right-click on the node, Browser Organization, or View tab, Windows panel, User Interface, Browser Organization. Choose the Views, Sheets or Schedules tab, tick the scheme's check box, click Apply, then OK. Use the Type Selector to switch and the dialog when you need its Edit or New buttons. Project templates supply default schemes, so the list you see depends on the template the project started from.

### Group views by a parameter of your own

The example here groups views by what they are for, Working or Documentation, with [a project parameter](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Model/files/GUID-28CBBEC2-6262-42D3-AE41-B36166E8318F.htm?ref=revitclub.net) named View Purpose. Both the name and the values are your own choice, not a Revit default. Before step 1, decide the values you will use: the scheme only works correctly when every view has one.

1. **Create the parameter.** Click Manage tab, Settings panel, Project Parameters, then Add. In Parameter Properties select Project parameter and type the name; use a name without a dash, as Autodesk requests. Choose the discipline and a Text parameter type, the group it should appear under, and Instance. Tick the Views category and click OK. Check: right-click any view in the browser and choose Properties; View Purpose is now listed.
2. **Give every view a value.** For each view, right-click it, choose Properties and enter Working or Documentation. Do this before the next step, because a view left without a value is the case the help warns keeps a scheme from working correctly.
3. **Start the scheme.** Click View tab, Windows panel, User Interface, Browser Organization. On the Views tab click New, name the scheme (By purpose, for instance) and click OK.
4. **Leave the Filtering tab without rules** for now, so the scheme hides nothing while you check it.
5. **Set the grouping.** On the Grouping and Sorting tab, set Group by to View Purpose and Then by to Associated Level. For Sort by, pick a built-in property such as the view name, Ascending: [the Grouping and Sorting reference](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-20919325-BC6E-48C2-B756-43B424B91B1B.htm?ref=revitclub.net) says custom parameters are not available as sorting criteria, so View Purpose groups and filters but does not sort.
6. **Apply.** Click OK, then Apply in the Browser Organization dialog.

Check the Views branch, not the dialog. The scheme name should sit at the top, with a Working and a Documentation group, each split by level. Then look at your 3D views and elevations: the scheme groups them by Associated Level too, and if they land somewhere unhelpful, change Then by to a property that every view carries.

![The same Plan A and Plan B floor plans grouped first by view type, then by View Purpose and Level 1](https://storage.ghost.io/c/85/87/8587d5e4-79c0-44e6-83d8-329eb0b5abe6/content/images/2026/11/v2-grouping-invariant-r3-f0cbc4f8082a.webp)

Both example floor plans are on Level 1: Plan A is Working and Plan B is Documentation. View Purpose is a custom parameter; grouping keeps the view names unchanged. [Open full-size view](https://storage.ghost.io/c/85/87/8587d5e4-79c0-44e6-83d8-329eb0b5abe6/content/images/2026/11/v2-grouping-invariant-r3-f0cbc4f8082a.webp?ref=revitclub.net).

### Group sheets by prefix

The Using field on the Grouping and Sorting tab groups by all characters of a value or only the first few. The help's own example is a set of sheet names starting AB-, AC-, BD- and BE-: with Using set to Leading characters and the count at 1, the A sheets fall into one group and the B sheets into the next. If your prefixes live in the sheet number rather than the name, choose Sheet Number in Group by. Build this on the Sheets tab of Browser Organization with New, the same way as the views scheme above, and check that the Sheets branch now opens into one group per letter.

### Filters, and what they hide

Read this before adding a filter. Items that do not match are excluded from the browser list, and Find in Project Browser cannot reach a view or sheet that the current scheme filters out. Since the scheme name shows at the top of the branch, give a filtered scheme a name that says so, such as Level 1 only, so nobody mistakes a partial list for the whole project.

On [the Filtering tab of the Browser Organization Properties dialog](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-07F1E1CD-C37C-461C-87B3-D584E1D6A1E8.htm?ref=revitclub.net), set Filter by to a property, the operator to Equal to or Not equal to, and the value from the drop-down. The help's example shows only the views for one level: Associated Level, Equal to, Level 1\. The two And rows add a second and third filter, and they are cumulative, so an item has to pass all of them to stay in the list. Check the result by switching back to an unfiltered scheme in the Type Selector: every view should return.

## Views, sheets and schedules keep separate schemes

Each list has its own schemes, as many as you need, and applying one to Views leaves Sheets and Schedules/Quantities as they were. [Revit 2026 added browser organization for panel schedules](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-B45C7140-BF8D-4192-AA1E-6C630F73D6A3.htm?ref=revitclub.net) for the electrical workflow. Revit LT readers can stay with the view and sheet procedures above: [LT is not intended for MEP modeling](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/RevitLT-GetStarted/files/GUID-186DDFB1-4508-4FE0-881C-512453501C9F.htm?ref=revitclub.net).

To [transfer the schemes to another project](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2027/ENU/Revit-Customize/files/GUID-2A49FE80-1B07-4C95-A0FE-42CE2001F3C2.htm?ref=revitclub.net), open both projects, make the receiving project active and choose Manage tab, Settings panel, Transfer Project Standards. Choose the source project in Copy from, select Browser Organization and click OK. This brings across every scheme from that project. If the Duplicate Types dialog appears, Overwrite transfers new standards and replaces duplicate types; New Only transfers new standards and keeps existing duplicates; Cancel stops the operation. Choose deliberately before replacing an existing setup.

## Where this route stops

If the browser remains missing after the display and layout checks, Autodesk's final troubleshooting step is to search the Revit forum at Autodesk Community. Include your Revit release and monitor arrangement when looking for a matching case. Once the list is grouped the way you work, the next model step is to create sheets and place the views on them.
